You’ve probably heard of lots of types of purified water- even at FreshPure dispensers, we offer three types: Reverse Osmosis, Alkaline, and Deionized. Now… what on earth is Deionized Water? Some people use it as their daily drinking water, but it has a lot more uses. We’re here to break it down and offer you 10 Uses for Deionized Water.
Deionized Water, synonymous with demineralized water, is H20 purification on a molecular level. DI technology removes electrically charged molecules from water as well as any trace minerals left over after passing through the Reverse Osmosis membrane. So, you can use DI anytime you want truly demineralized water. It’s great for cleaning, household appliances, and more.
Different from Distilled
Although Distilled and Deionized Water have similar uses, they are made very differently.
Distillation: Water is heated and the resulting steam is captured and re-condensed back into distilled water.
Deionization: FreshPure Water first goes through the process of Reverse Osmosis. Then, it passes through deionizing media to remove all ions.
10 Uses for Deionized Water:
- Your Humidifier: Have you noticed any white crust on your humidifier? Keep it functioning well with deionized water, which won’t cause any mineral build-up. Humidifiers can improve sinus or allergy problems, protect wood in your home, maintain humidity for a piano, and help prevent dry skin.
- Household Appliances: If you want to keep appliances like your coffee machine or steam iron from getting clogged by excess minerals (hard water), DI is great and will keep them functioning well.
- Aquariums: Perfect for your fish tank and more affordable than distilled.
- Cleanses and Special Diets: Supporting your body through a special diet or cleanse. Some doctors recommend DI for folks with heavy metal toxicity.
- Hygiene Products: Like shampoo, conditioner, or moisturizers.
- Precise formulations: Perfume, for example.
- Taking care of your car: Use DI for windshield fluid, to clean the engine, and radiator, or to dilute concentrated anti-freeze. This way, you know that no mineral salts will end up in your engine.
- Cleaning: As a detergent to clean surfaces, counters, etc.
- Some medial devices.
- In Laboratory Experiments: Ions in water can interact with different solutions in lab experiments.
Bulk Deionized: Great For the Planet
The plastic crisis is no secret. As much as possible, switching from single use plastic to reusable bottles is a choice we should all make to support our environment. That includes distilled and deionized water! Here are some statistics:
- Only 10% (15 million tons) gets recycled
- Americans used 50 billion single use plastic bottles in 2018.
- Over 8 million tons of plastic go into the ocean every year worldwide.
- Beverage Bottles account for 12% of unrecycled plastic products.
- Bottle Caps account for 17% of unrecycled plastic products.

And… Great for your Your Wallet
Bottled Deionized Water often sells for as much as $24.99 per gallon. Keeping a large aquarium filled with bottled deionized water is pretty pricey!
Instead, save the bottle and fill it up with FreshPure Deionized Water, which sells for between $0.35-$0.59 per gallon depending on where you live.
We hopes this helps demystify Deionized Water!
